Glossy hair is everywhere. Here’s what your post-summer hair actually needs.

Glass hair. Liquid hair. Mocha brunette. Caramel glaze. Everything online is currently glossy, tonal and described as expensive-looking.

Hair, obviously, has no idea how much you spent on it.

What people are really responding to is hair that looks considered: healthy shine, an intentional tone, movement through the cut and a finish that doesn’t look as though it needs wrestling into place every morning.

That makes this a trend we can actually get behind. But there’s one problem: glossy-looking hair is an outcome, not a single service.

If your hair feels rough, looks flat or has lost its tone after summer, booking the first treatment with the word “shine” in it might help, but it might not be what your hair needs. Sun, heat, swimming, holiday water, colour and hot tools can all leave different calling cards. The sensible answer depends on what your hair is doing now.

At JamesB, there are usually four routes: clarify it, repair it, refine the tone or reshape it. Sometimes it needs a combination. Here’s how to tell the difference.

1. Your hair feels coated, heavy or strangely dull

If your hair is clean but never quite feels clean, products have stopped behaving normally, or your colour looks cloudy rather than simply faded, you may be dealing with build-up.

That build-up can come from styling products, dry shampoo, minerals in water or simply using rich products that aren’t right for your hair. Adding another mask on top can make matters worse. This is the hair equivalent of spraying perfume because the room needs a window open.

A professional clarifying treatment helps remove what shouldn’t be there so we can see and feel what the hair actually needs underneath. For some hair, that alone brings back a surprising amount of movement and shine.

Best route: See our clarifying and treatment options.

2. Your hair feels rough, fragile or keeps snapping

Dullness and damage are not the same thing.

Hair that tangles more than usual, breaks during brushing, feels weak when wet or has lost its normal elasticity is giving us a different message. This is where a repair-focused treatment may be useful, particularly after lightening, repeated colouring, high heat or a summer spent in sun and water.

The honest bit: no treatment can turn a badly split end back into untouched hair. Products can improve strength, condition, manageability and appearance, but a split end is still a split end. If the last few centimetres are transparent, frayed or breaking away, treatment and a proper cut often work better together.

We’ll choose the treatment around your hair rather than throwing every fashionable ingredient at it. More product is not automatically more care.

Best route: Book a repair or conditioning treatment, or add a treatment when booking your usual service.

3. Your hair feels fine, but the colour looks flat or faded

This is where a gloss can be brilliant.

A professional gloss can refresh tone, soften unwanted warmth, add richness and improve the way light reflects from the hair. It’s one reason the current mocha, chocolate, amber and creamy-beige colours look so polished: the colour is tonal and deliberate, not just darker or lighter for the sake of it.

But a gloss is not magic paint. It won’t remove dark permanent colour, fix heavy banding or create lots of new lightness. If the canvas is right and the tone has simply wandered, a gloss may be exactly enough. If you want a bigger colour change, we need to plan the colour, not pretend a quick toner will do the job.

Best route: Book Glossing & Toning. *Consultation & Skin Test required. Choose the option that matches your hair’s length and density.

4. Your ends look thin, the shape has collapsed or styling suddenly feels difficult

Sometimes “my hair looks damaged” actually means “my haircut has grown out”.

When the shape disappears, hair can sit heavily at the root, lose movement through the middle and look sparse at the ends. You may find yourself adding more heat and more product just to get it to do what the old haircut used to do naturally.

A well-planned cut can make hair look fuller, move better and require less daily persuasion. It doesn’t have to mean losing loads of length. It does mean being honest about ends that are no longer contributing anything useful.

If you want a completely new shape, are removing more than three inches or are changing from long hair into a bob or crop, book a restyle rather than a maintenance cut. The extra time matters.

Best route: Choose the right cutting appointment.

So, do you need a gloss, treatment or cut?

Here’s the quick version:

  • Coated, heavy or cloudy: start with clarifying.

  • Rough, fragile or breaking: look at repair, often alongside a cut.

  • Healthy enough but faded or brassy: consider a gloss.

  • Thin ends or a shape that no longer works: book the cut.

And if your answer is “honestly, a bit of all four”, that’s normal. Hair doesn’t organise itself into neat online booking categories just because that would be convenient for us.

What about the big autumn colour change?

The wider trend for autumn 2026 is softer and more wearable: richer brunettes, warmer blondes, blended dimension and colours that grow out without immediately becoming a second job.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to go mocha brunette in September. A trend should give you ideas, not instructions. The right colour still depends on your starting point, condition, maintenance appetite and what you actually like when the algorithm isn’t shouting at you.

If you want to deepen your colour, soften old highlights, move towards a lower-maintenance blonde or make a more significant change, start with a conversation. We’ll explain what is realistic, what it will take and how it will grow out, before we start painting.

Best route: Book a colour consultation.
